project[4]: Self-Titled

Biography

iteration 1:
Tell us about yourself.
I'm Lim Jia Sheng, 19 now, & from KL. My hobbies include designing, coding, & producing, while my dislikes include writing self-biographies.
What is your passion?
My passion is to influence user-centric industries to focus more on their user's experience; influence said users' to expect such experiences, & propelling the trend forwards. This can be done by blending the user & the developer of applications, through well designed interfaces & systems to facilitate said interfaces.
What motivates you to achieve your dream?
What motivates that passion? Spite, probably. Badly designed experiences ruin good products (there's even research to back me up). Not enough attention is paid to the nuances — akin to the rough edges on a piece of furniture — which causes """bruises""" unnecessarily to otherwise willing users.
Lastly, for the actual artwork, I'll take all that rationale said, & squeeze the juices out of them. I intend to use slightly """unsettling""" imagery, as well as oddly satisfying ones, juxtaposed together to show the stark effects user-facing faults can bring.

iteration 2:

Tell us about yourself.

I'm Lim Jia Sheng, 19 now, & from KL. My hobbies include designing, coding, & producing, while my dislikes include writing self-biographies.

What is your passion?

My passion is to influence user-centric industries to focus more on their user's experience; influence said users' to expect such experiences, & propelling the trend forwards. Basically make the things I know, nicer. This can be done by blending the user & the developer of applications, through well designed interfaces & systems to facilitate said interfaces.

What motivates you to achieve your dream?

What motivates that passion? Spite, probably. I've always liked creating stuff, & being able to create things to fulfil solutions would be great. Solutions to problems such as, badly designed experiences ruining good products (there's even research to back me up), or not enough attention paid to nuances — akin to the rough edges on a piece of furniture — which causes """bruises""" unnecessarily to otherwise willing users.

How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?

For the artwork, I'd like the main concept to showcase my driving forces. I feel like, if I successfully capture that, the results of said driving forces shouldn't be hard to extrapolate (eg. 2 = 1 + 1).

Statement

iteration 1:
Tell us about your work.
This is a piece that should be inline with who I am & what I stand for, melting together state & mind.
What is the concept behind it?
The main concept is to provoke & showcase the drastic faults in interactive visuals today through my own lenses & styles. To vent, one may say. I mean like, have y'all used the Touch'n'Go App??
What is the message you want people to understand?
The main message is to give context regarding today's UIs. People who don't know what they don't know; people who don't know how bad they have it, won't demand for something better, even if they deserve it.
What is your motto/quote?
"Don't touch trash."

iteration 2:

Tell us about your work.

This is a piece that should be inline with who I am & what I stand for, melting together state & mind.

What is the concept behind it?

The main concept is to provoke & showcase the overdramatic drastic faults that bug me through my own lenses & styles. These include the ones stated above — interactive visuals — but also just generally the things keeping me going. To vent, one may say. I mean like, have y'all used the Touch'n'Go App??

What is the message you want people to understand?

The main message is that the fuel that ultimately produces the products of a person, is chaotic in nature. For me it might be the selfish spite, while for others it might be to be better than others, or to escape from required responsibilities. All """dirty""" motivators, but it doesn't mean that it isn't be beneficial to every person around (including) them.

What is your motto/quote?

"The car crash of every race."

Moodboard

I went scouring for a few posters/images that suited what I thought would be "cyberpunk(?)"-ish, fitting a theme of a chaotic/obfuscated process.

In looking, I was reminded of a trick: datamoshing — purposely destroying data to create something new.

sketches:

The main idea was to showcase the chaotic nature of motivation.

I took a few pictures of my self under several lighting conditions with different poses, trying to get a feel of how I could proceed:

  • 20210530_165403
  • 20210608_011714
  • 20210611_043904

After that, I took those into photoshop to spiff up some rough sketches.

  • sketch 1
  • sketch 2

Figure 1.2.6, Rough sketches of the ideas, 8/6/2021

Feedback was given for these sketches, & I continued on to combine both of them for the next posters.

Before actually doing the entire poster, I needed assets. Out to hunt I went.

Figure 1.2.12, Subset of the prominent assets featured in the poster, n.d

I used After Effects directly to create the final version of the poster. My reasoning behind this was that, having the assets all natively positioned & blended in the program expected to render out the final submission would streamline the process while cutting out integration issues (DynamicLink sucks & PS layers in AE can behave weirdly). Mr Fauzi did bring up a great point against this approach in feedback, & I'll definitely be rethinking using this approach because of that in the future.

With all that said, I ended up with 1 base poster, & 1 that extends from that.

With both the poster versions cleared for the go-ahead, I continued on to animate it.

I ended up with this, which I showed Mr. Fauzi & got feedback on it.

feedback:

  • 8/6/2021
    • The motto shouldn't be too """drastic""", tone it down a bit.
    • Both of the sketches are good, but the 1st one stands out, as it has more negative space.
    • Play around with the final artwork & ensure the design has enough space to breathe.
  • 14/6/2021
    • The size of the canvas is wrong.
    • However, the good composition enables it to be cropped in however way to achieve the target dimensions.
    • [Insert lecture about using After Effects instead of Photoshop]
    • The point of working in a team & not being able to fit into a workflow is very much valid, & I'll definitely rethink my approach in multi-facet designs.
  • 21/6/2021
    • The initial photo looks like an advanced test-shot. Removing the background might help with that.
    • The hand doesn't look like it has enough contrast.

To create is more than to produce. Creation encompasses production; creation encompasses the entire process that results in the final artefact. Unfortunately, getting to a point of creative completion is & will, never be fully sunshine & rainbows. If not for pure fun, then there must be a motive, right?

Well, every person has their own motive, a fuel to their fire, if you will. It’s never pretty to peel it back & reveal what’s pushing them.

A want for success?

No, the selfish desire to want to be better than everyone else.

An irk to change to world?

No, the selfish desire to expend energy to receive respect & a sense of self worth.

A loved one?

No, the selfish desire to keep them emotionally connected & not lose the investments put into them.

So, why wrap it all around a suppressor? We’re all horrible people; Embrace it & showcase it. Be evil to commit good acts.

🎵 Idealism - Nagashi

reflection:

Man this was an interesting journey. Honestly, my major experiences were just stumbling around until I landed on something I felt fit the main vision of the topic at hand. There were much more undocumented experimenting that went into the final product, which mainly focused on the """realism""" part of "surrealism". I found that trying to express yourself with such a delicate balance is a really interesting challenge, to know what type of elements to add & what to omit. Other than that, the step of going in & animating everything was pretty refreshing as well. At the end of the day, I feel like I'll be able to use what I've gathered here in terms of balance & express (& definitely discipline — layer systems & program functions), to further improve my future creations where it comes to using photography & imaging.
